A month-by-month guide to assist you in planning and maintaining your property in the event of a Fire, Flood or Earthquake.
| JANUARY
What is the risk of fire? Develop goals to mitigate any hazards. Prepare a Family Emergency Plan - where to assemble, who to call, update phone numbers before and emergency Check property for erosion - correct problem areas. |

Remove dead and storm damaged parts of trees. Pack an emergency kit; water food clothing, walking shoes, radio flashlight and first aid kit, home kit, car kit. Drop by your local fire station to
review your fire risk goals with the professionals and visit |
| MARCH
Service lawn mowers and weed eaters. Obtain a fire safety video from your local fire department or local Fire Safe Council. Make sure you are utilizing weekly Green Waste pickup to eliminate unwanted vegetation. |
| APRIL
Check and install new batteries in smoke detectors. Now is the time to get serious about reclaiming 30 to 100 feet of defensible space around your home. Activate your plan to reduce vegetation hazards. Request a Hazard Inspection from your local fire department. Update your plan. |
| MAY
With continued growth, it may be necessary to re-mow non-ornamental grasses. Remember to utilize your Green Waste pickup. Maintenance check on garden hoses, fire extinguishers and fire pumps. |
| JUNE
Conduct a family fire drill. Review your Family Emergency Plan. Do your outside house cleaning to remove flammables near your house, under decks, etc. Clean flammables away from propane tank. |
| JULY
Check summer weeds that are coming up in mowed sections that may require additional attention. Pull or cut re-sprouting shrubs. Check ladders and place close to house for easy access to the roof. Make sure emergency hoses are in good working condition. |
| AUGUST
Water plants that are stressed. Clean your homes roof and gutters. Remove branches 10 feet from chimney and stove pipe. |
| SEPTEMBER
Kids are back in school, revisit your Family Emergency Plans. Determine your child's school emergency plans. Clean storm drains and gutters - eliminate erosion areas. Check and replenish Emergency Kit. Clean up dried leaves and flowers. |
| OCTOBER
Check all smoke detectors, replace batteries and detector older than 10 years. Keep leaves raked up. Utilize your Green Waste pickup. Water stressed plants. FIRE DANGER may be at its peak in San Mateo County. |
| NOVEMBER
Clean rain gutters and roof. Check gutters and drains - eliminate erosion areas. Move things inside out of the rain. Service emergency generator. Conduct a Family Fire Drill. |
| DECEMBER
Review a fire safety video. Have a family meeting to review emergency procedures. Check the water in the Christmas Tree, make sure light cords are not frayed. Service lawn mower and weed eater and store for winter. Store emergency hose and ladders. |
